Powerlifters win six medal in Open National Meet

Orissa bagged six medals, including one gold in the 1st National Open (Unequipped) Powerlifting & Benchpress Championship, which was held at Jamshedpur from October 12 to 16. This was announced by Orissa Powerlifting Association general secretary Chitta Ranjan Swain.

In the benchpress competition, Sakti Ranjan Barik won the gold in the 66kg class, lifting 140kg, while Sangita Singh (67kg in 84kg class) and Mandakini Mohanta (65kg in 52kg class) claimed silver and bronze respectively. Sangita (Rourkela) and Mandakini (Mayurbhanj) also secured silver and bronze medals respectively in the powerlifting competition in the same weight classes. Sangita lifted 125kg in squat, 67kg in benchpress and 130kg deadlift for the total of 322kg. Mandakini, a police sub-inspector, lifted 100kg in squat, 65kg in benchpress and 142kg in deadlift for the total of 307kg.

Pradeep Kumar Patra grabbed the other silver medal in the 59kg class, lifting 170kg in squat, 105kg in benchpress and 225kg in deadlift for a total of 500kg. Orissa finished third in women`s team championship, while Sakti Ranjan Barik secured second position as strongmen in benchpress section.
